His mind had been thinking one thing, but she seems to be hinting at something else. "Considering you've told me before how much you like shopping in LA... lingerie?"
Because that is definitely something he can imagine Buffy doing, going into a shop and picking out something she thinks he'll enjoy, or just that she'd get a thrill out of wearing. It's a thought that has merit, and even if he's wrong about the 'surprise', he may have to bring up the idea of buying her something. Wearing something he'd like, hidden under her clothes so only she knows about it. The best kind of secret.
